GENETICS

As with most dedicated operators Mount Tyson Piggeries has been committed for many years to breeding the ideal pig for its purposes. This is always an ongoing process.

As a general statement our production lines consist of large white/ landrace cross animals. Hybrid vigour and on-going performance improvement is maintained by the introduction of selected semen and selected live animals under strict introduction and quarantine procedures.

Continual selection of our female line and specific use of proven trait boars has resulted in a very stable and consistent female animal with excellent mothering abilities, a calm nature and a high standard of litter size and weight. Our production target weights are a minimum 7 to 8 kg at weaning on 20 days, and a turn off minimum dressed weight of 72 kg (96 kg live weight) at 20 – 21 weeks.

We are currently introducing 10 new high performance HYFARM boars into our Mount Tyson herd. This page shows a selection of our HYFARM boar line.

(To the right is a 208 day old Landrace/Damline boar from ‘Krombit.’  LR/Damline x LW/Damline is the breed combination HYFARM always uses for production of female parent stock. HYFARM does not believe in complicated hybrid combinations or ‘synthetic breeds.’ F1 has always proven to be the best parent stock.)
